Another ipod question... Headphones...

Ramshackle (Mostly Harmless) posted this on Saturday, 9th June 2007, 15:57

Ok you guys, i really need some help here, recently purchased a ipod nano 8gig and have been living with the supplied headphones for a few days now and find my ears are getting larger due to having to stuff the headphones inside them, my quandry is this... i thought it would be more than easy to find a replacement pair from one of the major players i.e Sony, Senheiser etc etc to:

1. Be unobtrusive and comfortable
2. Give me a better sound than the supplied set

So far i have drawn a blank on no 2 on the list, all the ones i have tried are those little bud type designs with either squishy foam or rubbery buds to seal the ear canal, the problem seems to be lack of bass output on all those i have tried and to be honest unless i ram them in and pop down to the local A&E when i need to take them out, i cannot get anything other than a wishy washy lacklustre thin sound... now i`m not looking for hi fi quality, just something above the supplied earphones that are comfortable and sound good for long listening periods... The supplied ones seem to give the audio i`m happy with, just not the comfort...

Now i know there are some ipod guru`s on here and would really like some personal reccomendations as the Argos refund desk are getting sick of the sight of me....

:)

Ok, there is a headphone company call Grado. They do serious s*** and win loads of awards.
Over the past 10 years the best reviewed headphone on the market at it`s price point is the Grado SR60. Looks funny but delivers the goods £90. No, don`t run off yet. They have just released a "street" headphone called the I-Grado Better looking than the SR60 but (and this is the important part) it uses the same drive unit as the SR60. So you get top notch SR60 sound. Now comes the clincher. £40 pounds. I dont know how they can do it, but they have. The come in black or white.
Grado labs here.

Having just read this back I sound like one of those marketing monkeys we get on here. I don`t work for them, they just really are that good.

Thx Doc, just had a look and will check them out for home use.... but the main issue is finding some nice sounding discrete ones i can pop into my ear that dont need surgically removing.... :)

Go for a pair of Senheisser CX300`s - they come in black or white and sound MUCH better than the hopeless Apple branded ones that come with the iPod.

You can pick them up quite easily on the high street for £30-£40 but I got mine on ebay for less than half that. They`re small, comfortable and have decent levels of bass - highly recommended for the price.

I`ve got some of these and they`re really good. Just slide into the ear and the bass is good without being bombastic...

I originally bought some Phillips headphones but they were crap, these ones are much better quality sound...

I have some Sony MDRs and like them. Might try a pair of those CX300s though as I know Sennheiser are meant to be good.

I`m getting some CX300`s for Fathers Day next week but will have a look at the Doc`s suggestion...also, cheating I know but have you tried using the Equalizer to boost the bass on the Nano?
